Forman Students Take The Reins In Equestrian Program In 2009, The Forman School started an equestrian program to enhance the School’s athletic program. It’s since cantered on to become a unique offering cherished by several female students each spring.
Heather Johnson, of nearby Lee’s Riding Stables, leads the program as its instructor/coach. Assistant Head of School Helen Waldron said while Forman had previously facilitated some riding lessons for students, Johnson has the knack that makes this a truly special program.
“She has a magic touch with the girls and horses,” she said. “No one embraced it the way Heather has.”
Six Forman students took part in the program in 2010, which convened at the stables three days each week during the spring sports season. Girls worked on refining their riding skills and several took part in competitions in April and May.
Johnson explained that the girls gradually learned how to handle different situations with horses, from beginning riding form and controlling a horse to working around obstacles and jumping. Safety is a priority in the program and riding helmets are required.
She said the program typically instills an important attribute for every student.
“I think horseback riding in general gives people a better sense of self-confidence,” said Johnson. “You’re controlling this 1,000 lbs. animal. When you know you can control something that big, it gives you confidence in other areas of your life.” Students also learn the dedication involved in caring for their assigned horses. As riders, they become skilled at meeting the challenges each horse presents as a unique-minded animal.
During the competitions, the girls performed individually but supported each other as a team and two students earned show ribbons in 2010. Johnson said the transformative experience of girls who were timid on horseback at the start of the program was impressive.
“They seem like a different person when they leave,” she said.
Forman’s riders also had the opportunity to impart their own equestrian knowledge this year by volunteering to help younger children in the Litchfield Little Britches Therapeutic horseback riding program at the stables. The program provides therapy for children with special needs.
Forman’s program will again be offered for the 2010-11 school year.
