Forman Baseball - continued

Characteristically, the Lions demonstrated a convincing, broad-based team effort. Eric Opperman ’11 picked up an impressive win on a two-hitter with 9 strikeouts and Pat O’Keefe ’12 earning the save. Christian Rempel ’10 lined 2 singles, scoring twice, while Opperman and John Tomasek ’11 each knocked in 2 runs. Michael Yormark ’09 contributed an RBI, Greg Goldsmith ’11 singled and scored a run and Andrew Derwin ’09 demonstrated some adventurous base running, scoring twice and missing a massive 370 foot home run by inches at the plate. Let’s build a fence in the outfield and practice our home run trots!

I attended many of the team’s games this season, home and away, and have been impressed with the versatility and selfless teamwork of these athletes throughout the spring. Because of a season-ending injury to Bo Titcomb ’09, Christian Rempel and Ravi Mahtani ’09 assumed expanded pitching stints while playing infield and outfield positions as well. Kevin Gunderson played a flawless outfield and awed his fans with some dramatic “gappers” and line drives sprayed to all 3 fields, while Matt Pelow ’11 platooned with Andrew Derwin set a gold standard at first base. Greg Goldsmith caught every inning of the season.

No matter what the score, this entire team “played every game for seven innings” according to Coach Chris Ford. This dedication was typified by Gabe Krengel ’09, who excelled on the base paths and on the field during the Chase game, despite playing with a broken finger. Forman missed competing for the Division 1 title due to two close, heartbreaking losses to South Kent and archrival Chase School. Nevertheless, these athletes’ enthusiasm, team spirit and exciting brand of baseball gave us all a memorable baseball season.
