A Tall Honor for John Strawson

On Sunday, April 28, 2019, mathematics teacher and versatile coach John Strawson will be part of the 23rd class inducted into the Torrington High School Athletic Hall of Fame. This prestigious honor recognizes Strawson’s athletic achievements during his time at Torrington High School from 2001 to 2005, as well as his basketball career at Springfield College (2005-2009) and his continued involvement in athletics as a coach at Forman. Strawson currently coaches Forman's Boys’ Varsity Basketball and Girls’ Varsity Softball teams.

Strawson has been named coach of the year by the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council three times. Led by Strawson, the Forman Boys’ Varsity Basketball team won the 2013 Hudson Valley League championship and Strawson’s overall record at Forman is 84-37.

“I am humbled and honored by my selection to this esteemed list of former athletes and coaches, which also includes my sister, Christine, and my uncles Timmy and Jimmy,” said Strawson. “I owe a lot of my success to the encouragement and guidance of the important people in my life – my parents, my sister, Coach Tony Turina, and Coach Gerry Carbone. They always pushed me to be better, and whatever success I have had as an athlete and a coach is due to their support.”

The induction ceremony will be held at Chatterley’s Banquet Hall in Torrington on Sunday, April 28 with a cocktail reception beginning at 4:00 p.m.

John Strawson has been working at Forman since 2010. During this time, he has been a Mathematics Teacher, Coach (soccer, basketball, baseball, and ultimate frisbee, girls’ softball), Advisor, and Dorm Parent. He is also the Senior Class Dean. John comes from a family of educators who all teach at the high school level. John grew up in Torrington and lives on the Forman School campus.
