Around the Green

On February 22 and 23, the stage of the Jake Cloobeck '16 Theater transformed into the land of Duloc for a wonderful evening of comedy and singing as the theater department mounted an exciting and wildly entertaining production of "Shrek: The Musical." A wonderful story of acceptance and the idea of embracing our differences, "Shrek" entertained while delivering a positive message.
Courtney Schullery '18 was named New England All-Star for her high-level play at both shooting and point guard. The All-Star teams are chosen by the New England Preparatory School Girls Basketball Coaches Association. Schullery made the Class D/E West team and she will play against the Class D/E East team on Sunday, March 4 at Noble and Greenough School in Dedham, MA.
On Monday February 19th, while enjoying a dinner of roast beef and salmon, the Forman School community gathered to salute the men's and women's winter sports teams. Athletic director Scott McCarty '76 called the evening to order and reminded all in attendance that win and losses are important, but they are not the only way to measure the success of an athletic program. If the participating students are improving at their sports and having fun, then the program is on the right track.
In her weekly talk during Monday assemblies, Forman School psychologist Dr. Barbara Tarkin recently shared some research and advice on the merits of remembering to "unplug" from our cell phones and tablets. When people put their devices away, they report less jealousy, anxiety, and depression. "It's important for us to develop face-to-face conversational skills," said Dr. Tarkin. "We need to really be with each other in real time." Many people feel that being connected will make them feel less alone, but often that connection causes you to be alone in a room full of people because you're not relating to your friends and family while you constantly check your digital profile(s). Social media can actually prevent us from being truly social.
