Around the Green

In her weekly talk during Monday assemblies, Forman School psychologist Dr. Barbara Tarkin recently shared some research and advice on the merits of remembering to "unplug" from our cell phones and tablets. When people put their devices away, they report less jealousy, anxiety, and depression. "It's important for us to develop face-to-face conversational skills," said Dr. Tarkin. "We need to really be with each other in real time." Many people feel that being connected will make them feel less alone, but often that connection causes you to be alone in a room full of people because you're not relating to your friends and family while you constantly check your digital profile(s). Social media can actually prevent us from being truly social.
On the night of January 26, the Student Center was buzzing with activity. The school's innovative Project-Based Learning initiative was on display, showing visitors the latest updates on various student-led projects. While also a chance to demonstrate current ideas being worked out, the night is also a form of recruitment as students may see something they like and perhaps are inspired to begin a project of their own.
On Sunday, January 21, students and faculty were treated to the music of Bridgeport-based Caravan of Thieves. Their a gypsy-tinged string band whose compositions featured beautifully blended vocal harmonies, virtuosic improvisation, and stage antics that captured the attention of their audience.
With student ambassadors at the ready, and the grounds of campus looking their best, Forman School welcomed potential students and their families on the morning of Monday, January 15 for Winter 2018 Open House. With a light snow falling, visitors from Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New York, New Jersey, and Florida came to Litchfield to see firsthand what Forman can offer their children.
