At Forman, the arts are an essential part of the curriculum. Every student may select from a wide variety of creative options. The artistic process is not only a healthy outlet and change of pace, it is linked to the development and enhancement of problem solving skills necessary for math, science, and other academic subjects. The Arts Program at Forman teaches visual literacy and critical thinking for analyzing and developing ideas embedded in art.

Welcome from the Arts Chair

At Forman, the arts are celebrated and woven into the daily fabric of student life. Students can explore more than 30 courses and study in-depth disciplines that develop critical thinking, craft, and creativity. The mission is to empower students to gain a new language for self-expression and a lifelong appreciation for the arts.

Every Forman student is given an opportunity to explore and find their own voice in the arts. Our program is not extra-curricular, but integral to the academic experience of the students.

The breadth and depth of the program ensures opportunities for students at all levels. While some students take advantage of exploring a variety of mediums, many focus on one or two disciplines for several years. All of the courses are taught by experts-in-field. They are dedicated educators and practicing artists who model their passion for their students.

In our classes, both process and product are balanced to achieve excellence.

Students are engaged in the artistic process and appreciate each stage of process, developing their craft and gaining technical mastery. At the same time, students are asked to push themselves conceptually and pursue subjects that are authentic and personal. This results in tremendous growth in their creativity and artistic expression.

At Forman, we establish that, through art, there is another way to see the world. Art is an invaluable contribution to progress, change, and beauty in modern society. On an individual level, it offers ways to express hopes, digest sorrows, share dreams, and inspire each other. It is a safe forum to discuss subjects that are controversial but important for reflection and growth. Using art as the measurement for a healthy society, our community at Forman is flourishing!

Arts Department Chair

Each teacher in the arts department creates a unique studio environment within which students grow as creative, thinking citizens.

Faculty members model the creative process for students through their own experiences as working artists; many Forman students excel in the arts and graduate with more than the two years of required arts classes.

The Johnson Art Center
At the Johnson Art Center, one can find a painting or dance class in progress, the Forman Ensemble Players preparing for a new show, students editing video projects, or artists hanging their work for display. The Art Center houses three floors of creative resources, with visual art studios, a darkroom with eight enlarging stations, a video editing room, a 240-seat auditorium with a full stage and the Risley Gallery, which hosts student and professional art exhibits. Three theatrical productions are mounted each year, along with a number of coffeehouse events and talent shows. In the Music Barn students practice in the Jazz, Rock and Vocal ensembles and take classes in Music Theory.
