Junior Year Timeline

Junior year is considered by many to be the most rigorous year of high school, both in academics and in the process of preparing for college. It is also exciting as students look forward to the milestones of completing preparatory school and entering college. Below is a calendar and checklist that will keep students up-to-date and ready as the year progresses.

Junior Year

SUMMER - DECEMBER

  • College Counseling Department requests accommodations through the College Board for Fall PSAT/SAT (Summer)
  • Parents are notified of their child’s accommodations (September)
  • PSAT at Forman (October)
  • Fall Parents' Weekend (October) - College Counseling Presentation
  • ACT accommodation requests submitted on for all juniors (December)
  • College Counselors review PSAT results with students and mail results to parents. (December)

JANUARY

  • Juniors meet individually with College Counselors to start the college process and discuss individual interests and needs, and begin the college search.
  • Counselors will help juniors set up Naviance and College Board accounts (parents will be sent usernames and passwords).
  • Research process begins

FEBRUARY

  • Students continue to research prospective colleges and begin to develop an initial list of suggested college with the input of the counselor and parents
  • Contact college admissions representatives (college websites, email and phone) to introduce themselves and request information
  • Parents/students should start to schedule visits for March Break
  • Students begin to prepare for standardized tests in the Spring

MARCH

  • Winterim – College Tour Winterim is suggested
  • College visits are encouraged during Spring Break
  • Counselors will be available throughout the month of March to continue working with the students and parents

APRIL

  • Students and counselors will meet to discuss and debrief college visits and refine the list of prospective colleges
  • Develop a resume using Naviance
  • National College Fair in Hartford (if possible)
  • Students begin working on their college essays
  • ACT
  • Family Weekend - College Counseling Department Presentation

MAY

  • SAT
  • Students identify and contact two teachers to write letters of recommendation
  • Students narrow down list of colleges (8-12) (available in Naviance)
  • Students and counselors discuss and plan summer schedule and activities, college visits, internships, community service, work, SAT/ACT preparation
  • Students complete a working draft of their personal college essay
  • Artists begin developing their portfolios

SUMMER

  • Counselors will be available for parents and students to discuss and update related information
  • Continue to research and visit colleges
  • Common Application becomes available on August 1st
  • Artists continue to develop their portfolios
