In only its second year, Forman Robotics has been named runner-up in a major competition. Matthew Madsen '17 and Captain Christopher Mann '17 of Advanced Robotics Team 1930B came in second out of 40 teams in the Starstruck VEX Robotics game in the CTEEA University of New Haven Robotics Competition.

Sean Padgett of Forman School has been named the Assistant Wrestling Coach of the Year in all of New England. He was honored at Hyde School in Bath, ME on Friday, February 17 by the New England Independent School Wrestling Association (NEISWA).

Both the Boys' and Girls' Varsity Basketball teams have earned a place in the Housatonic Valley Athletic League championship game after a hard-fought tournament.

The Winter 2016-'17 Athletic Awards took place on Monday, February 20 in Peirce Dining Hall at Forman School. Athletes and coaches enjoyed a banquet with delicious food and coaches then honored our outstanding athletes. Athletic Director Scott McCarty '76 said, "Thank you all for a wonderful night. I appreciate the time and commitment by both our students and our faculty. Good luck to all our teams in the coming week. Go Lions!"

David Buckley '13 is currently in his last semester at Fairfield University. Zach Bitan '13 is in his fourth year of a five-year master's program at Trinity College. To say they have been working hard is an understatement.

Evan Schmid '08 and Kimberlie Gold '08 met at Forman during a PSAT exam their sophomore year. As fate would have it, Kim and Evan were seated next to each other and during an exam break, Evan took the reigns and asked Kim if she wanted to take the trip with him to go feed his mouse. Kim says, "I swear we laughed the whole time," and they haven't stopped laughing since.

School spirit has been at an all-time high for the last few weeks, with Dorm Wars sweeping the campus. This all-school event is designed and led by dorm prefects.

Joseph Burdis '07 has had a varied career working in the film industry, in sales at his father's woodworking machinery company, and at a paintball field in his hometown of Poughkeepsie, NY. While he still works at Taylor Manufacturing, it was paintball that led Burdis to finally hit his target.

John Reinicke was a four-year, three-sport athlete at Forman, participating in soccer, skiing, and baseball. According to Athletic Director Scott McCarty '76, John was the best goalkeeper that Forman has ever seen and was a college prospect for soccer. Unfortunately, John was injured while skiing during his senior year at Forman and while treating his injury, cancer was found and his arm had to be removed.

Forman School participated in the annual Penguin Plunge on Sunday, January 29, 2017. As part of our Community Service Program, students braved the icy waters of the Farmington River to raise money for Special Olympics Connecticut.

The annual Forman School Alumni Hockey Game was held Saturday, January 28 at Rumsey Hall School's Lufkin Arena. Current and alumni parents cheered the teams on alongside faculty members.

Joshua "JT" Papa '17 has had an excellent career as a student-athlete at Forman School, and his final season on the Varsity Basketball team just got sweeter. On Wednesday, January 25, 2017, Papa reached his 1,000th point in a home game against Christian Heritage School. In fact, he's up to 1,002.

Jewelry Making is one of the most popular elective courses at Forman School, and it's no wonder why. In a creative space, students are carefully guided in their craft by Arts Teacher Sandra Garcia, but also encouraged to employ their imaginations on each project.

Forman School is proud to announce the first ever members of our Athletic Hall of Fame, to be inducted during an official ceremony at Alumni Weekend, May 5-7, 2017. "We have an extraordinary group of athletes, coaches, and team members to represent our first ever Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony," Director of Alumni Programs Danielle Plante says. "We are excited about celebrating this new tradition and hope you will join us in May!"

One person can make a difference. That's what Forman School student Julian Blum '17 is reminding us this week. In just six weeks, the high school senior has taken an idea – Not Straight Against Hate – and turned it into a following with thousands of members who will march in a peaceful protest in New York City this weekend.

Prevention Specialist Glenn Hall of Freedom from Chemical Dependency (FCD) visited campus this week from Monday through Thursday. He held sessions with each grade level about making intelligent, healthy choices regarding alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use.

Do what you love and excellence will follow. That's a lesson we can all learn from Matt Bender, who has been an English Teacher to juniors and seniors at Forman School since 2000. Bender was bestowed the John N. Forman Award for Excellence in Education at the 2016 Commencement ceremony, and although he has dedicated himself to this career all these years, he was still surprised. "It's one of those things that I just don't think about," he says humbly. "Receiving the award was a great honor. It meant a great deal to me to be recognized for doing what I love."

On November 10-11, the Forman Ensemble Players did a marvelous job performing The MiracleWorker, the heart-warming story of how Helen Keller began her lifelong learning journey. American Sign Language (ASL) students participated throughout the process, practicing and providing guidance to the actors with the language.

The Forman School Boys' Varsity Soccer team is having an impressive season, and it just got better. With a 12-3 record, the Lions are roaring in the postseason. The team is in the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) tournament for the first time since 2005, and is now advancing to the semifinals.

I was recently at an educational conference listening to a very well-regarded national speaker talk about ways to increase academic rigor. A colleague leaned over and commented that she was so tired about hearing about academic rigor. The only time she wanted to hear the word rigor, at this point, was when it was followed by the word mortis. She felt like the combined words of academic and rigor should be banned because it is so overused it no longer means anything. I think she is not far off the mark.

Five Forman student-athletes will compete in the annual All-Star Matches at Loomis Chaffee this Sunday, November 13.

This year's Ecology class is participating in a yearlong Project Based Learning initiative. Students have been given a task: to solve the mystery as to why Bantam Lake, one of the oldest natural lakes in Litchfield County, continues to have Blue-Green Algae growths. This past summer, the growth was so bad, that town beaches were closed and people were not allowed to swim in the water. The students have to find out all of the possible causes.

Natalie Canterbury '14, captain of the Southern Vermont College Women's Soccer team, returned to Forman School on October 21 for a visit. She spoke with the Girls' Varsity Soccer team about her two years on the Forman soccer team and her experience in collegiate athletics.
