Several times in every school year, Head of School Adam Man and his wife, Beth, invite students and faculty to their house for a themed food event. On Saturday, October 13, sushi was the main attraction for the first gathering of the 2018-'19 Forman School year.

On the evening of October 14, Forman students went to the Jake Cloobeck '16 Theater to enjoy Cometry, a comedy ensemble group from Austin, TX that provides entertainment by encouraging the audience to laugh while learning. This event was the first performance in the 2018-19 series of cultural performances at Forman School.

A regular visitor to Forman is Dr. Vicky Zygouris-Coe. Dr. Zygouris-Coe is a Professor of Education, College of Education & Human Performance at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. "Dr. Zygouris-Coe observes a variety of classes in several different subject areas," says Jamie Dwan, Director of Studies. "She provides insight and guidance in a variety of ways to support teachers in helping their students learn using disciplinary literacy and improved ways to incorporate technology in the classroom."

One of the signs that the school year is well underway is the arrival of Open House which happened on Monday, October 8. Forman School welcomed a record 45 families and over 110 guests in total. The admissions office reported that the usual positive energy that accompanies the arrival of students who are just beginning their school journey was on full display.

To those who know him, Scott McCarty '76 is not really a scorekeeper. He doesn't hold grudges or check items off lists as he assesses people and things around him. He takes a longer view, especially as a coach, teacher, and mentor in his role as soccer coach and Athletic Director at Forman School.

After a morning of visiting classrooms and then lunch, the visitors gathered in the wonderfully air-conditioned Jake Cloobeck '16 Theater in the Visual and Performing Arts Center. Head of School Adam K. Man, Assistant Head of School Mike Kowalchick, and Assistant Head of School for Advancement Justin Solomon offered welcoming remarks and reminded the guests of how grateful Forman is for their support.

The beginning of the school year means the start of classes but a lot of learning at Forman School takes place outside the classroom. Recently, the Womens' and Mens' Groups have started their monthly gatherings to discuss issues of gender and identity as well as related topics. Health, Wellness, and Leadership Teacher Cecilia Gallo is the facilitator for the Womens' Group and Video and Film Teacher Sean Kelly does the same for the Mens' Group.

Each year, Head of Forman School Adam K. Man challenges the senior class president to a contest. They stand before each other, and the whole school, each armed with flash cards that have picture of a new student on one side and that student's name on the other. Whoever can name the most students correctly is the winner.

For the eleventh year in a row, headmaster Adam K. Man and his wife Beth invite seniors over to their house for dinner in the first weeks of school as a warm way to start the year off. The gatherings are intimate as they are split by gender as well as by two-three-or-four year seniors. The Mans started the tradition as a way to get to know seniors and to listen to them reflect on their time at Forman. And to get teenagers to talk, it helps to feed them as Mr. Man notes. "Every year, the four-year seniors just naturally slide into a trip down memory lane," says Man. "They'll say 'Remember that time in Lodge' and then the stories just flow."

Most of the Forman School community gathered in the gymnasium at 7:30pm on Saturday, September 8 to begin the traditional color wars games for the 2018-'19 school year. After all new students were assigned to either the Green or White team, the festivities began in earnest.

On the drizzly morning of September 10, students and faculty at Forman School gathered in the Jake Cloobeck '16 Theater of the Visual and Performing Arts Center for the first all-school assembly of the new year. Headmaster Adam K. Man, in his 11th year at Forman, welcomed the community and started off the year with a reminder of Forman's core values and guiding principles: truth, respect, and kindness.

Forman School graduated 57 students on Saturday, May 26, 2018 at the annual Commencement Exercises. The Manchester Pipe Band led the traditional academic processional on the bagpipes. Faculty members followed and then new Forman graduates processed to their seats next to the historic Graduation Tree on The Green.

After starting the season with a loss to Milbrook, the girls softball team at Forman School never lost again and won the Housatonic Valley Athletic League Championship by defeating Harvey 19-3 in the rain on Tuesday, May 21 at Litchfield High School. Overall, Forman finished second in New England for Class C schools.

Led by captains Mazwe Cuba '18 and David Kilburn '19, Forman School's Boys' Varsity Tennis Team concluded their season as runners up in the 2018 HVAL Championship.

After a day of exams, students and faculty walked under a sunny, blue sky to the Jake Cloobeck '16 Theater to experience the wide variety of artistic achievement by the class of 2018. The Arts Center lobby displayed work by seniors in photography, painting, jewelry making, and ceramics.

"There's Something Wrong with Katie" is Forman Makes a Movie's third feature, and it's a significant step up in scope and professional quality. Students and faculty packed the Jake Cloobeck '16 Theater at 7:00pm on Saturday, May 12 to watch the premiere together.

Under lovely blue skies and sunshine, Forman School's annual Strawberry Festival went off without a hitch. On Monday, May 14 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, students and faculty lingered together over food, snow cones, and many fun activities.

Each local chapter of The National Honor Society (NHS) is required to perform regular community service. Thanks to Jason Epstein '18, Forman School does a monthly act of service that truly enriches the local community and brings a smile to the face of a young child on his or her birthday.

On Monday, May 7, Head of School Adam K. Man announced the latest list of students to achieve the rights and privileges accorded to a John Forman Scholar, a list notably longer than usual.

After listening to Sandra Uwiringiyimana speak about her difficult life and times in the Congo at one of Forman School's cultural performance series events, Odessa Slauson '19 saw a chance to make a difference. "I'm aware that my life has unusual privileges," says Odessa. "This event reminded me that others are not so fortunate. I wanted to help."

The Green Key Society gives recognition to the students who perform services beyond the call of duty to Forman School. Green Key members are those generally pleasant and cheerful students who volunteer to help and who act in a manner befitting Forman School.

Twenty-five years ago, Wendy Welshans started the Rainforest Program at Forman School as a way to show students the positive effects that humans can have on the environment.

To kick off Spring Parents' Weekend, parents, faculty, and administration gathered in the Jake Cloobeck '16 Theater to listen to noted author and education expert David Flink, the Founder and Chief Empowerment Officer of Eye to Eye, the only national mentoring program for and by people with LD/ADHD. Flink was diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD when he was nine.

After dinner on Wednesday in the Peirce Dining Hall, Forman robotics wizardry was on display. Three robots battled it out by scrambling to place cones on top of cones for two points and tried for extra points by placing the cones in certain zones on the mat. Robotics teacher Wendy Welshans was the master of ceremonies. Head of school Adam Man ran the clock. And faculty members Patrick McCarthy and Adam Bendon served as referees.

Forman inducted 16 new members into its chapter of the National Honor Society on Monday. As current student and faculty members of the NHS filed into the Jake Cloobeck '16 Theater, music teacher Jerrod Cattey (piano) and Stella Brooks '18 (flute) played Brooks' own composition "Vols de Erudites"

The Forman School's Model United Nations team went to Cornell University in Ithaca, New York from Thursday April 19 to Sunday April 22. According to history teacher and team leader Erika Prince and team veterans, the conference at Cornell was the best of the year because of the creativity on display in the creation of the various committees offered.
