David Buckley '13
David Buckley graduated from Forman in 2013 and is currently in his last semester at Fairfield University. Originally from Indiana, he never thought he would stay in Connecticut for school until his teacher, Kyle Halloran '05, introduced him to Fairfield U. Since starting there, he has hit the ground running, but admits that his success hasn't come without hitting a few bumps in the road and getting back up. David admits to being overconfident when he first got to Fairfield, having changed his major three times; however, he believes that the perseverance and self-advocacy he learned at Forman was what got him back on track.
Since then, David has worked for and taken advantage of every opportunity that has come his way. After seeing his popular Fairfield-focused posts on social media sites, he was approached by the Fairfield Communications Office and asked to become a part of the social media team. Then came his summer internships in Client Services at Indeed.com and a small PR firm in London. On top of it all, David cofounded Fairfield University's chapter of Spoon University, which he describes as "a Buzzfeed for food." As the Social Media and Marketing Manager for the group, he took the social media channels from hundreds of friends, fans, and followers to almost 6,000 within weeks. SpoonU noticed, and consequently, David was contacted by headquarters and asked to be a representative on the Food Network's Snapchat Discover channel. His episode was viewed by 6.5 million people.
David hopes to parlay all of this experience into a Client Services position at a marketing firm in NYC. He says that the key to success is simple: "Be open about your learning difference and don't let obstacles stop you; let them motivate you."
Zach Bitan '13
Zach Bitan is in his fourth year of a five-year master's program at Trinity College. To say he has been working hard is an understatement. He will graduate with a Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts in Neuroscience and minors in both Jewish Studies and Biology. In addition to all of his course work, Zach does clinical research at Connecticut Children's Medical Center in the orthopedic sports medicine unit studying concussions, a hot topic in today's world.
In addition to his studies, Zach helps interview prospective students in the Trinity Admissions office and is a member of the college's nationally recognized Division I squash team, who took home the National Championship his sophomore year. He also started the on campus Jewish fraternity, Alpha Epsilon Pi, and was President of Hillel his sophomore and junior years.
Zach certainly does not let his dyslexia get in his way. Like David Buckley, Zach learned to advocate for himself at Forman, and carried that on to college. Not only has he taken full advantage of every resource offered to him at Trinity; he has also become good friends with the Accommodation Services Coordinator and even successfully campaigned for a formal testing center for students with need of accommodations.
Self-awareness is the foundation of success, according to Zach: "You have to remember you are not like other students. You have to be more responsible. You have to be your best self."
