Forman School graduated 50 students on Saturday, May 27, 2017 at the School’s annual Commencement Exercises. The Manchester Pipe Band led the traditional academic processional on the bagpipes, followed by underclassmen, faculty members, and the new Forman graduates. Everyone was seated next to the historic Graduation Tree on The Green.
Reverend Dr. E. Bevan Stanley of St. Michael’s Parish in Litchfield called the ceremony to order with an invocation. Head of School Adam K. Man then welcomed the many guests and congratulated the seniors, turning the podium over to the graduation speaker. Marcus Soutra is a leader in the LD field, advocating for different learners in all types of settings as president of Eye to Eye. With dyslexia and ADHD himself, Soutra gave an inspiring speech to the seniors and postgraduates, recalling some of his own experiences and giving advice on embracing oneself for being “different.” He told the students, “Be proud of who you are. Be proud of your difference. The minute you get out of college, people and employers are going to be looking for how you are different.” He also added, “Your out of the box thinking is what the world needs now more than ever.”
Valedictorian Zachary LaRocca-Stravalle ’17 gave a touching speech of gratitude to those who helped him and his classmates get to this day. Of the faculty, he said, “To think of Forman without you is to imagine Forman without a soul.” This was followed by a harmonious performance of Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror” by the Senior Ensemble.
Administrators and Department Chairs led the awards and presented each recipient with a specially engraved pewter cup. Many of the awards are in honor of past faculty members and alumni who made a great impact on the School and helped make it what it is today.
Finally, Mr. Man, Director of Studies Jamie Dwan, and President of the Board of Trustees Scott Sutherland ’69 conducted the conferring of the diplomas. Cheers rang out from the newly minted alumni as well as their proud teachers, families, and friends.
Congratulations to the Class of 2017! We know that there is no limit to what you can achieve.
