History was made at the Forman School fields this weekend. After a hard fought match Saturday against South Kent School, the Boys’ Varsity Soccer team has won the Housatonic Valley Athletic League (HVAL) Championship. “I’m in my 38th year here at Forman and we’ve been runners up numerous times, but this is the first time we have won the top championship game,” Athletic Director Scott McCarty ‘76 said.
Liam Lawlor ’17 made the first goal for the Forman Lions with an assist from Dylan Thambirasa ’17, but the South Kent Cardinals came back with two goals in response. Down 2-1 with 1:16 left in the game, Quinn Outerbridge ’16 thrilled the crowd by tying the game with an unassisted goal. The two teams went into a round of penalty kicks and the Lions successfully landed three goals from Thambirasa, Leni Palazesi ’16, and Franco Conti ’17. When South Kent missed their three goals, Forman’s win was secured.
Going into the playoffs, Forman was ranked #4 and South Kent was ranked #6. Although McCarty said that some Forman athletes have previously thought of South Kent as unbeatable, this team had the determination to win. “These kids were driven and they didn’t quit. They wanted it so badly and they were not going to lose this,” he explained. “It was a great game to watch for the spectators and having it at home was pretty special.” Beyond Forman’s tenacious spirit, McCarty felt it was their defense that made all the difference. “We defended well and made some great saves. There’s a lot of maturity on the team,” he added.
The Lions’ gritty attitude and momentum multiplied after Monday’s impressive 1-1 (5-4 PK) win at the home Quarterfinals against #5 Wooster School and then Wednesday’s 4-2 upset on the home field of #1 team Christian Heritage School at the Semifinals.
“There was a culmination of talent, with a group of seniors who were here for three or four years, and this win is a tribute to them,” McCarty said. “It’s good for us to know what it’s like to win championships again.”
