Most students go home for the summer and spend their time hanging out with friends, vacationing, or working a local job. For Jake Melcher ’17, it’s a little bit different.
This summer, Melcher was named the 2015-’16 Firefighter of the Year at the annual Vista Fire Department Annual Inspection Dinner. At the VFD, he is now the top responder and the youngest recipient to receive this distinction.
“Foreman Melcher joined the Vista Fire Department back in July 2014 and has been certified in courses such as Firefighter I, EMT Basic, Firefighter Survival, Truck Company Operations, Firefighter Assist and Search Team, Engine Company Operations and Thermal Imaging Camera Training Class. Foreman Melcher was the #5 responder in 2015 attending 106 calls out of 226,” a news release from the fire department states.
“I was actually pretty surprised when they called my name,” Melcher, a Foreman at the firehouse, says. In addition to his role at Vista, he is also an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) at both New Canaan Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Harwinton EMS. He earned Top Responder honors from New Canaan this year as well.
The Forman senior became interested in volunteering almost three years ago. “One of my friends was doing it and I thought it was really cool,” Melcher says. He began as an EMT in Harwinton, CT in January 2014 and his passion for helping the community has continued to increase. “They have fire department live-in programs in college,” he says, explaining his plans for next year. “You can go to classes and also volunteer as a firefighter.”\
With his determination, big heart, and achievements thus far, we are anticipating much success from Jake. Congratulations and keep up the good work!
