Courtney Schullery '18 was named New England All-Star for her high-level play at both shooting and point guard. The All-Star teams are chosen by the New England Preparatory School Girls Basketball Coaches Association. Schullery made the Class D/E West team and she will play against the Class D/E East team on Sunday, March 4 at Noble and Greenough School in Dedham, MA.

On Monday February 19th, while enjoying a dinner of roast beef and salmon, the Forman School community gathered to salute the men's and women's winter sports teams. Athletic director Scott McCarty '76 called the evening to order and reminded all in attendance that win and losses are important, but they are not the only way to measure the success of an athletic program. If the participating students are improving at their sports and having fun, then the program is on the right track.

In her weekly talk during Monday assemblies, Forman School psychologist Dr. Barbara Tarkin recently shared some research and advice on the merits of remembering to "unplug" from our cell phones and tablets. When people put their devices away, they report less jealousy, anxiety, and depression. "It's important for us to develop face-to-face conversational skills," said Dr. Tarkin. "We need to really be with each other in real time." Many people feel that being connected will make them feel less alone, but often that connection causes you to be alone in a room full of people because you're not relating to your friends and family while you constantly check your digital profile(s). Social media can actually prevent us from being truly social.

On the night of January 26, the Student Center was buzzing with activity. The school's innovative Project-Based Learning initiative was on display, showing visitors the latest updates on various student-led projects. While also a chance to demonstrate current ideas being worked out, the night is also a form of recruitment as students may see something they like and perhaps are inspired to begin a project of their own.

On Sunday, January 21, students and faculty were treated to the music of Bridgeport-based Caravan of Thieves. Their a gypsy-tinged string band whose compositions featured beautifully blended vocal harmonies, virtuosic improvisation, and stage antics that captured the attention of their audience.

With student ambassadors at the ready, and the grounds of campus looking their best, Forman School welcomed potential students and their families on the morning of Monday, January 15 for Winter 2018 Open House. With a light snow falling, visitors from Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New York, New Jersey, and Florida came to Litchfield to see firsthand what Forman can offer their children.

On Sunday, December 10, photojournalist Alison Wright delivered an autobiographical lecture featuring highlights from her career documenting the human condition all over the world. Wright's presentation took place in the Jake Cloobeck '16 Theater and was the last event in 2017 of the new regular series of creative showcases on campus.

Community service is an important part of student life at Forman School. Faculty and administrators regularly supervise activities that allow students to help people in need. In addition to regular and consistent ways to give back to our community, sometimes a particular need will appear and Forman will rise to the occasion.

On the evening of Sunday, December 3, guitarist Kaki King performed for students at Forman School as part of an ongoing series of performances to enhance the arts on campus at the Jake Cloobeck '16 Theater.

On Tuesday, November 14th, Forman School held its Fall Sports Awards Banquet in the Peirce Dining Hall. The all-school gathering is a tribute to the efforts of the coaches and players who work so hard to represent Forman in eight fall sports.

Forman School sent a delegation down to Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island last weekend to compete in the educational activity known as Model UN. Students are introduced to concepts of international relations, diplomacy and the inner workings of the United Nations.

On the evening of Sunday, November 12 at the Jake Cloobeck '16 Theater in the Visual and Performing Arts Center, Forman School's ongoing creative arts performance series featured jazz musician Etienne Charles and Creole Soul. The Trinidadian trumpet player led his band through a rousing set of music that delighted all in attendance.

On the night of Thursday, November 2, one of the sandwich offerings at Forman School's Lion Den Bistro was parsnip puree, sauteed bok choy, roasted mushrooms, Arethusa Blue Cheese with sherry vinegar on sourdough.

Forman School held its Fall 2017 Project Based Learning (PBL) Exhibition Night on November 3 in the Student Center. Three classes demonstrated their ongoing projects and explained how they related to their studies.

On Saturday, November 11, Forman School will host the Litchfield Hills Farm-Fresh Market for the second week in a row, from 10am-1pm in the Student Center.

The Forman football team scored a big win over rival The Gunnery on Saturday, October 28 under the lights in Washington Depot, CT. The Lions prevailed in the second overtime by a score of 60-54. The victory was Forman's first over The Gunnery in four games since the schools went to eight-man football in 2016.

For the third installment of Forman School's new creative arts performance program, on Friday October 27 at 7:30 pm, students and faculty enjoyed a rousing performance by Troker, a five-piece jazz-fusion band based in Guadalajara, Mexico. The name "Troker" is a nonsense word meant to suggest a truck and the band perceives their music as a "big, loud machine."

"Our goal was to build the perfect family motor boat," says Wendy Welshans, Director of Forman School's Outdoor Leadership and Rainforest Project. "We wanted it to be aesthetically pleasing and fun to use." And on October 11, the 14-foot solar-powered motor boat was launched onto Bantam Lake and is now available for purchase by emailing Assistant Head of School for Institutional Advancement Justin Solomon at justin.solomon@formanschool.org. Proceeds will benefit the Forman Annual Fund.

Fall Parents' Weekend at Forman School was a time to reflect, a time to celebrate, and a time to look ahead. Starting with a seminar by noted LD expert Rick Lavoie for new families on Thursday, October 12, to the exciting athletic competitions on Saturday, the weekend provided a great opportunity for parents to visit their children and to see up close the people, facilities, and resources that makes Forman stand out among boarding schools.

As part of an initiative to offer more creative performances on the campus of Forman School, the New York-based improvisation group Magnet Theater entertained students on Friday night October 6 at the Jake Cloobeck '16 Theater in the Visual and Performing Arts Center.

Despite some slightly inconvenient weather, Forman School's Fall Open House was a big success! Prospective students, parents, and some grandparents arrived early on the morning of Monday October 9 to see firsthand the many reasons why Forman might be right for their child. Duncan Marshall '67, Interim Director of Admission, said the rain didn't prevent a few families from showing up without prior arrangements. But an open house is an open house and the more was the merrier.

New Forman School history teacher Erika Prince feels right at home in the classroom. Because she's imagined herself there since she was in elementary school in her home town of Plymouth, Ma. "I've have always liked school. I really enjoy the atmosphere around sharing information and explaining concepts, ideas, and facts."

The only thing better than the weather on September 27 at Forman School was the looks on the faces of the students and their visitors. It was Forman's annual Grandparents' and Special Friends' day. The campus was buzzing all day due to a record 170 special guests for the day.

Forman School Athletic Director and Boys Varsity Soccer Head Coach Scott McCarty '76 is among the recipients of the first annual High School Coach of Significance Award given by United Soccer Coaches, a national organization founded in 1941 to support, develop, and advance the efforts of soccer coaches in the United States.
