On the night of Thursday, November 2, one of the sandwich offerings at Forman School's Lion Den Bistro was parsnip puree, sauteed bok choy, roasted mushrooms, Arethusa Blue Cheese with sherry vinegar on sourdough.

Forman School held its Fall 2017 Project Based Learning (PBL) Exhibition Night on November 3 in the Student Center. Three classes demonstrated their ongoing projects and explained how they related to their studies.

The Forman football team scored a big win over rival The Gunnery on Saturday, October 28 under the lights in Washington Depot, CT. The Lions prevailed in the second overtime by a score of 60-54. The victory was Forman's first over The Gunnery in four games since the schools went to eight-man football in 2016.

For the third installment of Forman School's new creative arts performance program, on Friday October 27 at 7:30 pm, students and faculty enjoyed a rousing performance by Troker, a five-piece jazz-fusion band based in Guadalajara, Mexico. The name "Troker" is a nonsense word meant to suggest a truck and the band perceives their music as a "big, loud machine."

"Our goal was to build the perfect family motor boat," says Wendy Welshans, Director of Forman School's Outdoor Leadership and Rainforest Project. "We wanted it to be aesthetically pleasing and fun to use." And on October 11, the 14-foot solar-powered motor boat was launched onto Bantam Lake and is now available for purchase by emailing Assistant Head of School for Institutional Advancement Justin Solomon at Proceeds will benefit the Forman Annual Fund.

Fall Parents' Weekend at Forman School was a time to reflect, a time to celebrate, and a time to look ahead. Starting with a seminar by noted LD expert Rick Lavoie for new families on Thursday, October 12, to the exciting athletic competitions on Saturday, the weekend provided a great opportunity for parents to visit their children and to see up close the people, facilities, and resources that makes Forman stand out among boarding schools.

As part of an initiative to offer more creative performances on the campus of Forman School, the New York-based improvisation group Magnet Theater entertained students on Friday night October 6 at the Jake Cloobeck '16 Theater in the Visual and Performing Arts Center.

Despite some slightly inconvenient weather, Forman School's Fall Open House was a big success! Prospective students, parents, and some grandparents arrived early on the morning of Monday October 9 to see firsthand the many reasons why Forman might be right for their child. Duncan Marshall '67, Interim Director of Admission, said the rain didn't prevent a few families from showing up without prior arrangements. But an open house is an open house and the more was the merrier.

New Forman School history teacher Erika Prince feels right at home in the classroom. Because she's imagined herself there since she was in elementary school in her home town of Plymouth, Ma. "I've have always liked school. I really enjoy the atmosphere around sharing information and explaining concepts, ideas, and facts."

The only thing better than the weather on September 27 at Forman School was the looks on the faces of the students and their visitors. It was Forman's annual Grandparents' and Special Friends' day. The campus was buzzing all day due to a record 170 special guests for the day.

Forman School Athletic Director and Boys Varsity Soccer Head Coach Scott McCarty '76 is among the recipients of the first annual High School Coach of Significance Award given by United Soccer Coaches, a national organization founded in 1941 to support, develop, and advance the efforts of soccer coaches in the United States.

On the morning of September 11, 2017, Forman School headmaster Adam K. Man opened his 10th year at the School with warm welcoming remarks to the student body for the first School assembly in Jake Cloobeck '16 Theater. Mr. Man organized his remarks around two quotations and an aphorism, with all three being tied into important themes for students to ponder all year.

Forman School Headmaster Adam K. Man spoke of how the plan for today's ceremony really began in 2007 as part of a vision of Forman's needs and aspirations, for now and well into the future. An expansion plan was decided after much deliberation. The Science Center was built first because the teaching of the sciences had progressed from a "demonstration class to a hands-on class."

When you think about a boarding school in the summer time, the primary thoughts revolve around peace, tranquility, and quiet. The students are home and the teachers are on vacation. The campus rests.

The theme for our fourth and final week was "Plan for Yourself." As we concluded a fantastic July, students were prompted to think about how they will use the skills they have learned when they transition into school in September. Executive function skills such as self awareness, self control, organization, and planning have been reinforced in every aspect of Forman Summer. All of the students have new tools to practice mindfulness so that they can pause and find their center, especially when life gets chaotic and they start to feel out of control.

"Advocate for Yourself" is the theme for week three of Forman Summer 2017. During morning meeting each day, students practiced mindfulness in the form of meditation, body scan, walking meditation, and mindful listening. As students become more aware of their strengths and more comfortable with themselves as learners, it is important for them to also be able and willing to speak on their own behalf.

Week two of Forman Summer 2017 has been action-packed. The theme this week is "Assist Yourself," so students have explored the different ways they can help themselves reach their goals and be successful in and out of school. Teachers introduced a variety of assistive strategies such as setting phone reminders, spell check, and choosing to sit away from friends who might be a distraction during dorm meetings.

Forman Summer 2017 is off to a great start! The theme this week is "Know Yourself," so students have been given opportunities in the academic classrooms to identify their strengths, challenges, goals, and passions. For example, in Mr. Bucklin's writing classes, students are exploring Thoreau's connection with the natural world and how they can use the trees, rocks, and the stream as symbolic representations of themselves.

The Forman School Summer Program is in its fourth year and keeps getting bigger and better! The coed boarding and day program, which runs for four weeks, welcomed 71 students from 12 counties and 16 states.

Forman School welcomed over 50 friends and neighbors from the Litchfield community to a wine and cheese reception on Thursday, June 7. Adam K. Man and Beth Man hosted the event at their home on Norfolk Road.

Forman School graduated 50 students on Saturday, May 27, 2017 at the School's annual Commencement Exercises. The Manchester Pipe Band led the traditional academic processional on the bagpipes, followed by underclassmen, faculty members, and the new Forman graduates. Everyone was seated next to the historic Graduation Tree on The Green.

Forman School is proud to announce that two postgraduate student-athletes have committed to play collegiate athletics. This news comes only weeks after three seniors signed with Mitchell College. Taylor McNair '17 and Ian Fargo '17 participated in respective signing ceremonies on Tuesday, May 23. Taylor will be joining the Women's Basketball team at NCAA Division III Curry College and Ian will row with Grand Valley State University.

The Spring Sports Awards Banquet took place the evening of Monday, May 22, 2017. It was an impressive season for many of our student-athletes, who showed great improvement, leadership, and teamwork. In addition to students, the coaches were recognized for their dedication to their teams. "Thank you to all our athletes and coaches for a wonderful year and all your hard work. I appreciate your time in all you do to help make our seasons so successful," Director of Athletics Scott McCarty '76 said.
