The Forman School community honored the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. In recognition of Dr. King’s influential work, students and faculty members wrote messages of kindness, love, and inspiration. The messages, displayed on colorful notecards, compiled a kindness wall in the Williams Academic Building. Centered in the display is a statement that reads, “We believe society is bettered when we learn from and embrace those with different experiences and perspectives than our own. Our community values truth, respect, and kindness.” 

During the All-School Assembly on MLK Day, students and faculty members read excerpts of King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., on August 28th, 1963, during the March on Washington. 

Students also shared personal reflections, and we observed a moment of silence in the spirit of unity.

“Thank you to those who volunteered to read an excerpt and to share a response of reflection,” said Arlis Astudillo, Mathematics Department Chair and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Facilitator. “MLK Day does not end here. His legacy continues to shape us in everything we do. Reflection can and must continue in your friend groups, in the dorm, or [in] advisory. Today, we honor not just the man but the enduring dream of equality that Martin Luther King Jr. shared with the world.”
